This difference in precipitation is due to the fact that during Winter it rains on Pender while it snows out East.
The SS Iroquois steamship, which served North Pender and South Pender, was first able to take a quicker and safer passage to Sidney on Vancouver Island in 1902 after a canal was dredged between the islands. This area was used by the Coast Salish First Nations for thousands of years and has a rich history. To further connect the two islands, a picturesque one-lane bridge was constructed in 1955 and is still in use today. One island or two?
