Pender Island Facts

Residents of Pender Island are very protective of their ecology and environment, living by the mantra of reduce, reuse, recycle. The beautiful Mediterranean-like climate presents the challenge of conserving precious fresh water. There are a variety of clubs, groups, societies, and other organizations to suit all interests and abilities.

Coast Salish First Nations peoples have been visiting and living on the island for over 7,000 years, calling it Sqla-lot-sis or Homeland. Evidence of encampments and shell middens can be found around the island. Today, the Tsawout people have a reserve on their ancestral lands at Hay Point on South Pender.

Explorers from Spain and Great Britain traveled through the Gulf Islands during the 1700s, but did not settle. In 1791, a Spanish expedition visited Pender and named it Ysla de San Eusevio. The islands were officially named by Captain Richards for Staff Commander, later Captain, Daniel Pender, RN, who surveyed the coast of British Columbia aboard the HMS Plumper, HMS Hecate, and the Beaver from 1857 to 1870.

Area Information

Population: Pender Island is a popular holiday and recreation destination, boasting around 2500 full-time residents and an additional 5000 part-time residents that come during the summer months. Most of the island’s population is situated on North Pender, where the majority of services and amenities are located. South Pender is more rural, though Bedwell Harbour is an exception, as it is home to a resort and marina.

Island Size:

Cramer Hill, the highest point on Pender Island, stands at 266m above sea level. The island is 58.72km2 in size – that’s 14,681 acres.

Shoreline:

The shoreline of Pender Island stretches for an impressive 84 km and provides more than 38 public beach access points for visitors to enjoy.

Location:

The Southern Gulf Islands, including North and South Pender Islands, are situated in the Georgia Straight between the east side of Vancouver Island’s southern region and the BC mainland, just north of the San Juan Islands.

Climate

Sunshine: Pender Island is an ideal destination for a getaway, or a permanent residence, due to its stunning natural landscape and mild sub-Mediterranean climate. It has an annual average of over 2,000 hours of sunshine, perfect for those who want to enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle all year round.

Rainfall:

If you find yourself missing the snow, there are some of the world’s best skiing resorts just hours away, including Whistler, home to the 2010 Winter Olympics. The average annual rainfall on Pender is just 36 inches, which is 26% less rain than Vancouver, where they receive an average of 45.5 inches. Despite this, it is still more rainfall than in Eastern Canada, where they experience snowfall instead. This difference in precipitation is due to the fact that during Winter it rains on Pender while it snows out East.

History

The SS Iroquois steamship, which served North Pender and South Pender, was first able to take a quicker and safer passage to Sidney on Vancouver Island in 1902 after a canal was dredged between the islands. This area was used by the Coast Salish First Nations for thousands of years and has a rich history. To further connect the two islands, a picturesque one-lane bridge was constructed in 1955 and is still in use today. One island or two? North Pender and South Pender were originally one island connected by an isthmus.
