History
The mountain now known as Mount Burke was named for Edmund Burke by Captain George Henry Richards of HMS Plumper while surveying Burrard Inlet in 1859. During the 1960s, an unsuccessful ski area was opened, but it closed within a decade. Mount Burke is now a part of Pinecone Burke Provincial Park, which was created in 1995.
Confusion often arises between Mount Burke and Burke Ridge, more commonly known as Burke Mountain. Burke Ridge was known as Dollar Mountain in the 1920s, due to the logging activities of the Canadian Robert Dollar Company in the lower portions of the mountain.
