6 Important Things to Do When Moving into a New Home

After making that down payment and finally signing all that paperwork, you’re now ready to move into your new home. Congrats! Finding that perfect house to move into is one of the biggest milestones for many, and you must be so excited to settle in your new neighborhood and begin this new chapter of your life.

Before you get to unpacking, painting and decorating your new abode – you know, the fun stuff – you want to make sure you do the important things first. After all, you’re taking on the role of a homeowner, and aside from numerous perks, homeownership comes with certain responsibilities. Here’s what you’ll need to cross off your checklist before you get to pop open that champagne and begin celebrating.

Inspect your new home

Right after you move in, it’s time to embrace your inner Sherlock Holmes and do an extensive inspection of your new abode. Be meticulous about the process, addressing any visible damages you notice during the inspection. From leaking faucets to running toilets to broken light switches, be sure to check for these common issues and fix them early on. If you’re suspecting that your new home has a leaking problem, it’d be best to pay attention to the water meter. Register the readings and then do it again after a couple of hours. Don’t use the water during this period. Any differences in the readings are indicators of leakage and the issue should be addressed as soon as possible.

Make sure your home is secure

After inspecting your home for issues and fixing them, it’s time to start making your home as safe and secure as possible. Check your doors and windows and see if they need an extra layer of protection. Make sure you can close them securely and remember to lock them, even when you’re at home. It wouldn’t hurt to check your neighborhood’s crime rates. If you think your home’s in need of an additional layer of security, consider installing burglar alarms, or better yet, set up a home security system. Check the functionality of smoke detectors and fire extinguishers as well, and make sure you’ve got a first-aid kit just in case.

Have your new home insured

When it comes to unexpected events such as burglar, fire, or natural disasters you don’t have control over, you can never be too careful. While it’s important that you take safety precautions and make your home a safe place to live, sometimes things like these will happen. This is why you want to have your home insured – it will help protect your home and belongings, the things that matter the most to you, giving you the much-needed peace of mind as a new homeowner. Knowing you have a cover you can count on will provide relief in case something bad happens and you won’t have to worry about any financial losses you encounter.

Revisit your budget after buying a new home

Speaking of tackling first home finances, it’s important that you revisit your budget after completing the home buying process. Making the switch from apartment living to homeownership means an increase in expenses. This is why you want to make sure that your budget is large enough to cover all those extra costs once you go from renting to owning. You can expect the utility bills to go up and various homeowners association fees that will need to be paid. Plus, you’ll also have to think about maintenance, landscaping, housekeeping, and repairs and plan your budget accordingly.

Take some time to child-proof/pet-proof your new home

If you’re a parent or pet owner, you already know how important it is to prevent your little one or your furry friend from potentially hurting themselves. This is why taking precautionary measures should be one of your top priorities once you move in. Take the time to child-proof and pet-proof the areas of your home where children and pets are going to be spending most of their time and prevent them from getting into trouble.

Create a maintenance checklist

Keeping a maintenance checklist handy is a must for new homeowners as some of these chores can easily slip your mind. Checking fire extinguishers, cleaning drains and plumbing fixtures, and replacing HVAC filters are some of the things that need to be done on a monthly basis. Other chores such as testing smoke detectors and water filtration systems as well as vacuuming refrigerator coils and tackling deep cleaning aren’t as frequent – they can be tackled bi-annually. Finally, some of the things that should be taken care of on a yearly basis are termite inspection, chimney and gutter cleaning, plumbing and roof/home exterior inspections, as well as heating and cooling system servicing.

Moving into a new home can be both exciting and exhausting, but delaying things isn’t going to make it any easier. Tackling these important tasks right off the bat will take some of the stress out of the equation and let you fully enjoy moving into a new home without any worries on your mind.
