COMPLETE OWNER-BUILDER SYSTEMS, LLC (COBS)
Tony Perry presented details about the patented steel post system he has developed

This system is used in conjunction with standard steel beams, trusses and light-weight steel interior framing studs, roof purlins and C-channels. After delivery of the COBS kit to your building site, a crew arrives to erect in four to seven working days the entire structural framework, including the R-50 insulated roof. The labor costs for this portion of construction are therefore less than conventional construction methods.

The steel framework is largely recycled, saving a new tree by using a old car recycled into steel. Steel is less expensive than wood, and does not warp, twist or shrink after the house is built as wood is prone to do. The combination of steel and bales provides an attractive, energy-efficient building. Depending on size and design and the amount of sweat equity contributed to the project, a building with steel and straw bales can be very cost effective. The steel is environmentally sound, with very low embodied energy use.

Using your floor plan and elevations, COBS develops a full set of plans, sends it to you for final revisions, enters changes, if any, into the computer, double checks the engineering, stamps the drawings (COBS' engineer is certified in 48 states), and returns the set to you. The plan set can be used for obtaining building permits and by local contractors. A construction management manual is also provided to assist you throughout the entire building process.

When the steel is assembled, you will have purchased the straw, stored it out of the weather and, at the appropriate time, a COBS representative comes on site, if required, for two days to make sure the latest techniques and methods of straw bale construction are clearly understood by your crew or your contractor's crew. COBS can provide advice and answer questions throughout the project.

COBS can help with financing and a permanent mortgage through their own inhouse financing company to provide seamless financing anywhere in the USA. (Seamless means the construction loan and the permanent mortgage are closed at the same time, saving on closing costs).
